The Value of Blackjack Cards
Blackjack uses a standard deck of 52 cards. Each number card is worth its face value. This means that a 2 card is worth two points, and a 9 card is worth nine points. The face cards, Jack, Queen, and King, are all worth 10 points a piece. Finally the Ace card can be worth either one point or eleven points.
Vocabulary for Blackjack
The vocabulary for Blackjack is relatively easy to learn. The first term that you will need to know is the term Blackjack. This means that your hand is worth 21 points. Another term you will need to know is hit. Hit means that you want the dealer to give you another card. You can hit as many times as you want as long as you don' t go over 21 points. If you are happy with your hand and you don't want any more cards you tell the dealer stand. If you would like to double your bet after you receive your first cards you call double down. After you make this call you are only allowed to be hit one more time. If your first two cards are a matched pair, then you have the option to split your pairs and make two independent hands. If you take this option you will need to place an even bet on each hand to continue. Insurance is the final term that you will need to learn. This term is used when the dealer's upcard is an Ace. In this case you would ask for insurance, and then if the dealer's down card is a 10 or face card then the player will win at a payout rate of two to one.
How to Play Blackjack
To play this game you will need to first place your bet. After you make you initial bet the dealer will give you two cards and he will deal himself two cards. While your cards will be face up, only one of the dealer's cards will be face up. The object of this game is to build a hand that is worth 21 points, or that at least comes closer to 21 points than the dealer's hand. If you build a hand that has a value of more than 21 you bust, and you lose your bet. If, on the other hand, the dealer's hand is valued over 21 points then they bust and you win. While the player is allowed to hit and stand as they wish, the dealer is required to hit on 16 and to stand on 17.
